Ain't nothing going on but the rent: six apps that could change house sharing for ever

Renting isn’t tech-heavy. Most rented homes are lucky to have a decent broadband connection; the flashing green lights of its hub only a few steps ahead of the electronic doorbell.

But behind every bedroom door, every sofa-lined lounge, sits a tenant tapping away at their laptop or smartphone, busily using apps or online services to line up everything they need in life from baked beans to Breaking Bad.

So how come there's so little tech just for tenants? Many of our team rent in shared houses and flats. What would they like to see launched to make their renting lives easier? Some are half silly, some partly serious, some – it turns out – already exist.

Democratic house

House sharers often face toe-curling group decisions, but are rarely around to vote on them. Who’s going to tell Stu he can’t wear just his pants in the lounge? Do we carry on using Faye's Netflix account even though she's moved out? Do we need an instruction manual for the toilet brush? Happily, there are apps for this. Check out Vote Up and Doodle Poll.

Key renters

It’s 1am on a week night and Jane is banging on the front door. She’s locked herself out, again. She’s grovellingly appreciative as someone stumbles down to let her in. Is there not a tech solution to this often-repeated scenario? Step forward KeyNest, which is a smartphone-accessed network of ‘key safes’ at 24-hour shops all around London, and soon the country, where the house ‘spare key’ can be stored.

Angry Tenants

A modified version of Angry Birds. Except you launch the birds at your annoying landlord instead of pigs. Why? Because the front door handle still sticks three months after you reported it. And we all need to vent somewhere.

Broadly banned

Bob spends a lot of time in his room. A quick snack from the fridge after work and he’s straight upstairs to be a gaming superhero, or download a film, or hack his way into something. Whatever he’s doing, that’s fine. But sometimes his private passions slow the broadband to a crawl. So please, someone develop a metering system for shared broadband services.

Jointly responsible

Getting everyone to pay the bills for water, electricity, gas, broadband and council tax is a pain. And paper is still involved. Why are there half a dozen apps for sharing restaurant bills but it would appear none for sharing the payment of bills in rental properties? After much digging we're pleased to say there is one - HelloAcasa
