60 Second Summary - What's it like to be a letting agent?

Letting agents have one of the hardest but often thankless jobs in property. To earn their crust they must work to tight deadlines, please challenging landlords and hand-hold tenants when tenancies go awry.

But the markets they operate in vary wildly. For example, in the leafy London suburb of Hampstead you'll find one who has a very unusual if not unique daily routine.

She is Lauren Abrahamsohn of estate agency Glentree Estates who works on both renting out and selling the area's freshly-minted multi-million pound mansions and luxury apartments.

And while this is her bread and butter, she has also helped ITV show The X-Factor rent 'houses' for its wannabe superstar contestants.

Where do you work?

In Hampstead, North London for Glentree Estates.

How long have you worked there?

For six years. Before that I worked for an advertising firm both in London and New York.

Did you expect to go into property?

It was not the plan! But I came back from New York and definitely needed a change so my dad (Glentree founder Trevor Abrahamsohn) suggested I came in to meet the head of the company's New Homes division. We got on really well and I started the next day. Since then I haven't looked back.

What's your patch like?

Everyone I deal with in Hampstead is very clever and articulate, so I think my time working in New York gave me the skillset to deal with them.

I also grew up round here, which helps, because I understand the locals' psyche and mentality. Everyone is very property savvy here so it's difficult to pull the wool over their eyes. Properties here sell and rent for very large sums, up to £15 million to buy and £12,000 a week to rent.

Who are your landlords?

When vendors can't achieve the price they had hoped for then these days they would rather rent it out. Often, we advertise big mansions to rent and buy at the same time. It's a demonstration of where the market is right now.

We've been doing more and more of these kinds of rentals recently, even though there are tax complications for the super wealthy when they rent a property.

Are they hard to rent out?

We've got good contacts among both footballers and the clubs they play for to find them prime rented homes in North London, and we also help A-list Los Angeles celebrities to find properties to rent when they come to the UK to work.

What do you like and dislike and like about your job?

When I'm busy I love it and get a buzz from the variety of the job because with new-builds you get a lot of input into how they are designed, marketed and launched whether it's for sale or rent. But I'm not good at twiddling my thumbs when it's quiet.

What's it like being a woman in such a male-dominated business?

It is very male dominated but I'm not sure why. But I think it gives me the upper hand because it's easier to disarm people and use different negotiating techniques than if I were male. I think there's a perception among many people that women are easier to trust than men.

What do you do during your downtime

I walk my dog, go to the theatre plus I'm teaching myself Spanish at the moment.
